For many of you who know or may have met Ronnie Bryan (Bryan's Car Rental and also an accomplished competitive cyclist), he could use our help. Ronnie has taken it upon himself to try and raise $14,000 to help a young Anguillian, Marlon Davis, get some badly needed surgery, currently scheduled for July 28 in Puerto Rico. I talked with Ronnie last weekend about Marlon and the surgery he needs and Ronnie emailed me the following:

Quote:
Marlon Davis is a 15 year old Anguillian filled with laughter and the spirit of any teenager! Marlon has a smile which lights up his face, a big heart, and bigger dreams of becoming a doctor! His passion and love of road cycling has fueled him to become a major competitor among the junior cyclists on the island. Marlon is presently a student at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School.

While cycling is challenging in itself, Davis’ love of cycling has become more challenging than for his competitors due to abnormal bowing of the knees. Medical examinations have indicated that there is an immediate need for corrective surgery to prevent further deterioration that would limit him for life.

Unfortunately, Marlon's family can not afford this surgery, so Ronnie, along with his cycling club, is spearheading a fundraising project (including a raffle of a 42 inch flat screen television and a cycle race on June 13, 2010) to assist with covering Marlon's $14,000 medical costs.

If anyone on the Forum wants to help out and support both Ronnie and a wonderful young Anguillian by making a donation, you can send a check made out to the "Marlon Davis Fund" to the following address:

Marlon Davis Fund
% Ronnie Bryan
P.O. Box 1422
Blowing Point, AI 2640
Anguilla B.W.I.

Ronnie did not ask me to post this, but I know how deeply committed he is to helping Marlon get his needed surgery. He recently accompanied Marlon to Puerto Rico to see the doctors and plans to go with Marlon again in July when he has the surgery.

Donations in any amount on Marlon's behalf will be very sincerely appreciated.

Bob

Hey Bob, thanks for making us aware of this situation.

As a triathlete and lover of AXA.....it's a no brainer. God's speed to Marlon during his impending recovery and ultimately cycling times!

The bicycle races being organized by Ronnie Bryan, along with his Blowing Point cycling club, for Marlon Davis will be held this Sunday, June 28, starting and finishing on the Jeremiah Gumbs Highway. The first race is scheduled to start at 11 AM with two other races later in the day (1 PM and 3:30 PM?). Food and drink concessions will be available for spectators. Both Anguillians and visitors might enjoy taking in some of the event.

Ronnie's making progress in raising money for Marlon's surgery in late July, but still needs some help to push this over the finish line. Please help if you can - if you are on island show up on Sunday, buy some food and drink and/or raffle tickets and enjoy some exciting races. Alternatively, you can still send donations to the "Marlon Davis Fund" to the following address:

Marlon Davis Fund
% Ronnie Bryan
P.O. Box 1422
Blowing Point, AI 2640
Anguilla B.W.I.

Thanks Bob,
I hesitate to mail to AXA. Years past things would never arrive and once we got a card returned exactly one year later !!! Let us know soon.

Rastefan had no problem with the mail -- Ronnie confirmed he received our check in less than 2 weeks' time.

We mailed a check a few weeks ago. It hasn't been cashed yet. I hope that it makes an appearance somewhere soon.

I received an email from Ronnie yesterday and he said all the checks were deposited a few days ago so they should be clearing the bank soon.

Ronnie does have a paypal account and he can also process credit card payments for Marlon through his car rental business. You can send me a PM if you want details or call me personally at 401-524-8893 and I will take your credit card information and pass it on to Ronnie - it would be fun to talk to some Forum members. Smile

Ronnie has asked me to thank all those who are supporting Marlon - it is truly appreciated!

Thanks for asking, Pete - it's been a challenge! With the help/encouragement of a friend in Boston, the doctors reduced their fees somewhat to help out, but the last I knew Ronnie was a couple of thousand dollars away from the amount needed, so any last minute contributions will help.

A number of forum members have sent checks or put a donation on their credit card, but if there are any forum members out there who still want to help out, there is still time.

P.S. My Avatar suggests that you "wave to the goat - it feels good", but not as good as helping a young man like Marlon!

Just an update - - Marlon had his surgery this week on Wednesday and it reportedly went well. He is still in Puerto Rico with his mother and Ronnie and hopes to return to Anguilla by early next week where he will recuperate and rehab.

Thanks so much to all the forum members who helped out this young man (and for those that still want to, it's not too late).

One last update - Marlon is back in Anguilla after successful surgery and he, his family and Ronnie are all truly grateful to all those (both on island and off) who helped make this possible.
