We have a new service from San Juan SJU
to Anguilla AXA starting February 14, 2009
Departures from SJU
1:30 PM and 5:30 PM
Departures from AXA
9:00 AM and 3:00 PM

Prices start at $399.00 per person including tax
Planes are Beechcraft 1900D Turbo prop capacity 19 reclining leather seats.

I have been in touch with Rainbow International, and its representative says that the one-way charge (SJU-AXA or AXA-SJU) is $225; round-trip is $399.00. Presently, AE charges about $425 round trip for their useless schedule.

I hope that we can all send this airline business, as we really need to get midday access to AXA and to let AE (and other airlines) know that flights from/to SJU/AXA can be profitable.

The problem though for many is that the $399, added to the cost of flying into and out of SJU from the US, makes it pretty expensive. Ideally Rainbow could "partner" with some of the major airlines (other than AA) flying into and out of SJU so that one could book roundtrip flights to AXA through a major airline.

But, at least there is an alternative to AE - it's so frustrating having only one flight a day in the evening.

That's exactly what we said too, Bob. $800 extra a couple to get on island 7-8 hrs. earlier is pretty expensive. If the cost was half that it might be worth seriously considering.

Once again, the market proves to be an efficient allocator of resources.

Anguilla is going after the affluent vacationer.

Because of that public policy, it doesn't have any huge properties.

Thus the only convenient flights to the island are expensive, which affluent vacationers can well afford.

The cost of anything is the foregone alternative, you get what you pay for, if we lived here we'd be home now, you am where you is, &c.

So fly into SXM St. Maarten where most everyone can afford to stay, take a ferry to Anguilla (still the best buy) and in some cases avoid the dreaded SJU San Juan all together.

SJU never bothered me. However, flying directly to Anguilla during the day is such a thrill. I get a rush, just looking down at the blue water and seeing the island on approach. Thats when my vacation starts. Its not the same approaching from St. Martin on a "boat" IMHO. But we can't have everything, so I will take what I have got and it still looks good.

Well as solace we pay more to fly than anyone. Friends that live in San Juan paid over $500.00 for a round trip to Anguilla recently.
Flying anywhere in the Caribbean is very expensive considering the relatively short distances between islands.

and feather, it is not really SJU that bothers most people, rather the long waits because the flights from AXA are not coordinated to accommodate the various flights so you might be sitting there for more than 5 hours.
Also, it give the luggage handlers time to pick through your belongings and unfortunately they do it with gusto.

To anyone who is not aware, when an airline has a major schedule change like this, you are allowed to cancel your "non-refundable" tickets without penalty. As a general rule, if the change is more than 90 minutes, all penalties are waived. This is only helpful, of course, if you can find better flights on another airline.

Jo-Art is correct, inter island travel is prohibitive. American Eagle is the way I get from A to B and I rely on this airline. Fortunately I have never had a serious issue with them but when it goes wrong, it's bad.

Has anyone actually booked seats on Rainbow at the above rates? I am hearing conflicting stories about the reality of this new service.

Rainbow does offer charter service to Anguilla, but not at prices that most folks can afford.

With great anticipation, I contacted RIA to purchase seats for the SJU-AXA legs. To my great disappointment, the hoped-for start date of around February 15, 2009 will not be realized. No one there would venture to estimate a new start date, which leads me to fear that it is quite some way off. What a shame for the owners and for all of us whose schedules have been so disrupted by AA and AE.
